In early December 2019 reports began to leak out of mainland China that a new version of an old virus was spreading rapidly with ground zero pinpointing the metropolis of Wuhan, a city of 11 million people. As with all viruses, this one rapidly spread to other countries in Asia before leapfrogging its way to the USA about 3 weeks ago. As of today only about 60 Americans have been afflicted with the disease but the number will most likely increase rapidly. Called the coronavirus because of a “halo” or ring around the virus resembling the sun’s corona, this particular strain has been given the moniker “COVID-19” (COVI for coronavirus, D for disease and 19 for the year it was identified). Like all viruses this one binds with a cell in the respiratory tract (nose/throat/lungs) by using surface proteins to unite with receptors similar to a lock and key mechanism. Through this method the virus gains entry to the cell and infects it.

This virus, like all others, needs a host to survive and replicate. Although COVID-19 can last up to 24 hours on an inanimate surface if it does not find a host it will die. Besides being picked up from surfaces the disease can also spread in airborne droplets.
