Fun Making Your Own Soap

It’s that time of year again! At Gifts of Nature Organics we open up our kitchen to you, whether by yourself or in a group, to make soaps. Having fun pouring your own soap and adding your own pleasant smelling essential oils gives us a smile as we match your soap with a second one that we donate to charities such as Mary’s Place in Ocean Grove, NJ, a home for cancer patients in recovery. And when you pour your own soap you are engaging in a process that goes back almost 3,000 years! The word “soap” is derived from a hill in ancient Rome named Mount Sapo. The top of the hill served as a place dedicated to the pagan ritual of animal sacrifice, where officials offered sheep as well as other animals to the gods. At the bottom of the hill was a river that was used by local women to wash clothing. These industrious folks noticed that the river had remarkable detergent capabilities, which we now know was caused by animal fats draining down the hill and into the river. By the late 1800’s soap was made by combining animal fats with ashes and boiling the mixture.

When you make soap with us, however, you will be using a soap which is a “castile” based product, meaning it is made completely using plant matter. When you add our 100% therapeutic grade essential oils to your finished product you will have a soap that cleanses gently without any toxins, is safe for sensitive skin, will soothe dry and irritated skin, is naturally hydrating and with the addition of certain essential oils can ease eczema and psoriasis.

The process only takes about an hour from start to finish and is a great way to teach youngsters how to manufacture one of life’s essentials. Fun and seasonal molds are also available. Make a santa soap, or a Christmas tree soap, or reindeer soap as well as many others. Just pour, add oils, throw in our freezer and marvel at what you have created!

Events are available every Tuesday and Thursday in November and December from 11am til 7 pm but it’s essential you reserve your time slot by calling 732-223-5521. Look for our facebook and Instagram ads promoting the event. Looking forward to seeing you and having fun pouring soap!
