Effective Bug Spray Can Be Made Without Harsh Chemicals
There is a harsh reality of chemical bug sprays. Repeat after me…..Cyfluthrin, Permethrin, Pyrethroids, Diethyl-Meta-Toluamide…. If you had trouble pronouncing these sinister sounding words you are not alone. And I’m sure you’re now thinking, “forget the pronunciation, what in the world are they?”
The words listed above are chemicals contained in bug sprays, effective for sure against pesky insects, but also quite possibly harmful to your body as they seep into your pores after spraying arms, legs and possibly torso.
Let’s take a look at two of these chemicals, Permethrin and DEET.
Permethrin is an especially insidious component of most over the counter bug repellents. It is considered a neurotoxin, meaning it can kill brain cells. It’s also extremely toxic to bees, cats and all aquatic life. And recently the honeybee population in the US and globally has entered a crisis stage, due to a loss of biodiversity, destruction of habitat and bee killing pesticides, such as we’ve described above.
Diethyl-Meta-Toluamide, commonly known as DEET, shows mixed results when it comes to safety. The EPA released studies in 1998 and 2014, saying it “does not present a health concern to the general population, including children.” But considering their long list of warnings and precautions about this chemical, it’s much better to err on the side of caution and avoid it if possible. Children, especially, should never wear any insect repellent any longer than necessary. The longer it’s on, the greater the chance of getting on hands and face thus possibly ingesting it.
